Although snow days and winter break cause many families and students to "hibernate", we at Bertram are already thinking about the sunny possibilities ahead. We're here to help you prepare for those important milestones of the spring season.

This month we launched our new blog, "From the Quad", so you have a new way to gain the edge -- The Bertram Edge -- in achieving educational excellence. Our seasoned team of educational advisors will be offering their perspectives on college and graduate school admissions, independent day and boarding schools, as well as special needs education options. Please be sure to comment on our posts and give us suggestions for future topics!

Warmly,
Cammie Bertram and The Bertram Team

Signs and Signals

The Changing Education Landscape

What will education look like in the next decade? Read some predictions here along with ways that new economic realities are changing "old rules."

The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that today's youth spend more than 7 hours each day using electronic media. And because they multi-task, they may actually be packing more than 10 hours of media into that time. Need to unplug? Watch the video in The Right Road column at right. (Read the Kaiser report here.)

The number of students taking AP exams is at an all-time high yet many students may simply not be properly prepared as failure rates are also climbing. Read more in this USA Today article.

Schools have become more creative and competitive in their marketing approaches and this Yale recruiting video is getting a combination of rave reviews and razzes, according to this New Yorker article. What do you think? Take our poll!

The Right Road

Planning and Parenting Guidance

Are you imparting stillness in your household? The digital age has created an "always connected" mentality but stillness is essential for adolescent development according to this psychologist. Watch this brief video to learn why.

School will be out for the summer before you know it. Save yourself from the stresses of last minute planning by considering options now. Engage your child in decision-making and make sure that he or she is a willing partner. If your teenager will be job-hunting, this website is useful. And independent advisors can help your family hone in on the right summer experiences for your child. Advisory services like this one help parents match the right program to their teenager's interests and your family's schedule and budget. And we at Bertram can recommend a wide range of academic summer options that combine learning and fun.

We have also begun an internal effort at Bertram to reduce our carbon footprint, relying on e-communications whenever possible, conserving energy, and looking for creative ways to reduce, re-use, and recycle.

The Savvy Guide

Expert Insights

When a teen "launches," it can be one of the most exciting and fulfilling experiences that a family can have. However, more often than not it is a time of stress, anxiety, despair, and doubt...and that's just for the parents! The "family life cycle" phase of launching is a pivotal milestone for which most families need to prepare in advance. It redefines everyone's role including the teen to young adult, the parents to Empty Nesters, the siblings to new roles and functions. (They may now take out the garbage!)

Mike Fontana, LMFT, a Family Therapist and Coach with an office in Westport, Connecticut, has written a very helpful article on the need to establish a team of advisors to help teens determine options as they prepare to leave home.
